Partners not consulted for cabinet reshuffle

Partners of ruling Awami League-led alliance were not consulted before sudden reshuffle in the cabinet of Sheikh Hasina, said alliance leaders.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina did not even inform the ministers concerned from the alliance partners before bringing about the changes in her cabinet announced on Wednesday, several ministers confirmed while talking to New Age.
‘It is the prerogative of the prime minister to change her cabinet as per the constitution…None of the ministers, so far I know, was informed about the reshuffle,’ said new water resources minister Anwar Hosain, who was earlier given the portfolio of environment and forests ministry.
Echoing Anwar, new social welfare minister Rashed Khan Menon, also the president of Workers Party Bangladesh, told New Age that he was not informed of the changes beforehand.
The prime minister on Wednesday changed the portfolios of three ministers and a state minister and allotted ministries to the four newly appointed ministers in a major reshuffle in her expanded cabinet around the end of the government’s five-year tenure.
Newly appointed AKM Shahjahan Kamal has been given the civil aviation and tourism ministry in Rashed Khan Menon’s place.
Portfolios of water resources minister Anisul Islam Mahmud belonging to Ershad-led Jatiya Party and environment and forests minister Anwar Hossain, chief of a JP faction, have been interchanged.
State minister for posts and telecommunication Tarana Halim has been transferred to the information ministry as state minister where Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction president Hasanul Haq Inu is serving as minister.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction president Sharif Nurul Ambia told New Age that the issue of bringing about changes in the cabinet was not discussed with them, even in the meeting of the Awami League-led alliance.
Shirin Akhter, general secretary of the JSD faction led by Inu, also confirmed that the matter was not discussed in the meeting of the alliance.
GM Quader, co-chairman of the JP faction led by HM Ershad, told New Age, that he was not aware of the cabinet reshuffle at all.
The reshuffle came just a day after three new faces ruling Awami League lawmaker from Lakshmipur 3 constituency AKM Shahjahan Kamal, AL lawmaker from Rajbari 1 constituency Kazi Keramat Ali and IT expert Mustafa Jabbar were inducted into the cabinet.
Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services president Mustafa Jabbar has been given the posts, telecommunications and information technology ministry while Kazi Keramat Ali has been made state minister for madrassah and technical education.
When asked for comment about the overall changes, Menon told reporters at the secretariat that such reshuffle in the cabinet was very normal in the election year.
The next general election is expected to be held in December this year.
