The National Board of Revenue will adopt a ‘soft manner’ in revenue collection so that economic activities, investment and livelihood of people are not affected, said its newly appointed chief Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan.
Harsh manner is not an effective means to collect revenue, he said at the first meeting with the tax officials at the NBR conference room in the city’s Segunbagicha area.
He also said that he was getting suggestions of examining whether every tenants and apartment owners of residential buildings in Dhaka have tax files or not.
Revenue collection would grow significantly if all of them have tax files, he said, adding that all might not have tax file.
The government on Wednesday appointed him as senior secretary of the Internal Resources Division and NBR chairman for two years on contractual basis.
The revenue board would also have to find out who are not paying taxes properly, he said.
There are allegations that many well-off people don’t pay tax, he added.
This is surprising that many top businessmen are not the highest taxpayers, he said.
The NBR will have to talk to them and motivate them.
He, however, said the taxmen should maintain a cordial relation with the business community to ensure business friendly environment.
Tax officials should not extract tax from business people rather realize the government’s revenue fairly, he said.
