Informal sector workers ‘to be brought under insurance’

State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque on Tuesday said the informal sector workers will gradually be brought under an insurance system.

“All the informal sector workers will be brought under insurance facility in phases as the government is working sincerely for the welfare of workers,” he told a deal signing ceremony.

Workers Welfare Foundation and Bangladesh Motor Vehicle Mechanic Workers Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard at the Secretariat today.

Workers Welfare Foundation director general Faizur Rahman and president of Bangladesh Motor Vehicle Mechanic Workers Foundation Mahbubur Rahman Ismail signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides.

Mujibul Haque said a total of 1,000 mechanic workers will preliminarily be brought under the insurance scheme.

He said motor vehicle mechanic workers are playing an important role in keeping motor vehicles operational across the country.

He said the informal sector workers are performing their duties taking high risks. “Many workers who fall victims to accidents are deprived of financial facilities for lack of legal system of social safety.”

The junior minister said the government has launched an insurance scheme under the Bangladesh Workers Welfare Foundation Act, 2006 to provide social safety to the workers and their families.

“State-owned Jiban Bima Corporation has prepared a group insurance scheme with lower premium and it was launched on November 18 last. By the time, 303 workers have been brought under the insurance scheme,” he said.
